The effects of the food we eat!

Not too long ago I read the book, 100 mile diet. This really opened my eyes to Canada's sustainable food market. While reading this book I became very aware of my surroundings when it came to the food I ate and what and where it was produced with. The lack of communication between us and our food suppliers have became very apparent to me. When I realized that 90% of the ingredients on the list on most of the foods I would eat on a regular basis were words that I couldn't pronounce I was shocked. Then I thought it would be interesting to google some of these fantastically long and medical like terms. Try it! take something that you eat regularly or love to eat, "out of the box, can or bag." What do you find?



I also found that alot of foods that you would think contain sugar actually contain every modified sugar substances then actual pure sugar. There are so many types of sweeteners out there. Some of which are killing us slowly that some people are in jesting on a daily basis. We have grown up learning that too much sugar is bad for us. What about too much preservatives? What about these products that have been proven to be shortening our life spans in this generation? Aspartame is a perfect example. Do you know what foods that you eat have this so called "great diet product"? I see many people who will only drink diet pop. Well in reality (my opinion) it is way better for you to be drinking a little less regular pop then it is to drink diet pop more often. I stopped in jesting anything that contained aspartame and I know that myself I feel alot better. I didn't even realize that I felt bad in the first place. I believe that alot of us has grown up and such products as this and don't realize what they may be doing to our bodies.   1. I disagree. Sugar *is* bad for you. The negative health effects of sugar (diabetes and obesity, others) far outweigh those of "artificial sweeteners".

    Many people just parrot what they hear from other people, or the news, or the office gossip, without looking into the subject themselves. "I heard Splenda causes migraines!, I heard Aspartame causes cancer!" I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard an officemate start talking about it.

    I noticed you talked about Aspartame, I use Splenda, and here

    "Splenda usually contains 95% dextrose (the "right-handed" isomer of glucose) which the body readily metabolizes, combined with a small amount of indigestible sucralose. Sucralose is derived from table sugar (sucrose) through a patented, multi-step process that selectively substitutes three chlorine atoms for three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule. The tightly bound chlorine atoms create a molecular structure that is remarkably stable.[9] Splenda is recognized as safe to ingest as a diabetic sugar substitute.[10] Research suggests that the amount of sucralose that can be consumed on a daily basis over a person’s lifetime without any adverse effects is 15 mg/kg/day,[11] or about 1 g for a 70 kilogram (150 lb) person. This is equivalent to about 75 packets of Splenda or the sweetness of 612 g or 2500 kcal of sugar."

    Seventy Five packets a day is *safe*. Woah! A can of pop doesn't even have a single packet! A can of non-spelnda pop has over THIRTY FIVE grams of sugar. The WHO recommended intake says no more than FIFTY grams a day! One can of pop, coupled with your regular food, pushes you over that 50 grams just like that. 2500 cal of sugar. That’s almost a pound of body fat. And now you're into unhealthy territory.

    Should you be drinking additives? Well, of course not. Water is the obvious choice. But for me, pop is something I'm not going to give up. I understand that alcohol is negatively affecting my health, but once again, something I'm not willing to sacrifice. Moderation is the key right?

    A 2007 safety evaluation found that the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener.[2] Some sources of claims regarding postulated aspartame dangers and conspiracies have been the subject of critical examination.[27] In 1987, the U.S. Government Accountability Office concluded that the food additive approval process had been followed for aspartame.[22][28] Based on government research reviews and recommendations from advisory bodies such as the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Food and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by more than ninety countries worldwide.[29][30] In 1999, FDA officials described the safety of aspartame as "clear cut" and stated that the product is "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved."[31]

    I think It’s cool you’re trying to do a healthy lifestyle, it’s something I’ve been *really* big on for quite a while now. I was a little confused about additives too, and I did some snooping and found out all I really could. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to be mean in any way shape or form, Just trying to present the other side of the argument: D I was actually watching this study yesterday, and they told a restaurant full of people that their food had been tainted with “MSG”, and that people may start experiencing symptoms. And wouldn’t you know it, five seconds later a bunch of them were complaining of headaches and nausea. And then they told them the truth, that there wasn’t any MSG, it was just a healthy meal they ate. So I got to thinking, maybe most of this is just in the head.
